Repopulating Poplar & Call the Midwife
Join a host in this 30-minute talk to hear about life in the 1950s as a midwife and district nurse.
Jennifer Lee worked in Poplar and the surrounding areas in the 1950s as a midwife and district nurse, and lived and trained with Anglican nuns of the Order of St John Divine in Lodore Street.
Her memoirs paint a warm but often heart-breaking picture of life for families –women in particular – in and around the docks in the post-war era.
In this talk, you'll hear about the rebuilding and repopulating of close-knit communities and the significant contribution of the extraordinary nurses and nuns that worked tirelessly to support them.
