The High Tide - Overflow of the Thames on Tuesday 27th of January 1850 - Vere Street, York Road, Lambeth
This drawing depicts the overflow of the River Thames at high tide on Tuesday 27th January 1850. Here residents of Vere Street, Lambeth, are seen wading through streets flooded with the polluted and diseased water of the River Thames.
Overflowing high tides regularly brought sewage to the doorsteps of riverside homes in low-lying areas of London, such as Lambeth. As tides retreated they left a black, greasy and foul-smelling scum on the streets.
