Funeral Procession of the late Lord Viscount Nelson, from Greenwich to Whitehall.
Nelson was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805 and his funeral was one of the great state ocasions of the early eighteenth century. His body was returned to England preseved in spirits. ON 23 December 1805 it was carried up the Thames to Greenwich and then conveyed into the Royal Hospital . On 8 Januray 1806 escorted by 500 naval pensioners the coffin was transferred to the barge of the Victory and rowed upstream to Whitehall watched by thousands despite gale-force winds. It is this scene which is depicted in this print.
Pugin drew at least four watercolours of the stages of the funeral which re held in the collection. Prints were soon produced from the drawings and published on 1st April to great popular demand.
