Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1666
London
This is a German newspaper or broadsheet with an etching of the Great Fire of London attached to it. News of the Great Fire spread across Europe. A disaster befalling a major European city with important trade links was an event worth reporting and would been of interest to many people. Foreign merchants especially would have worried about the effect of the fire on their businesses. People would also have wondered about the political consequences for England, which was at war with France and the Netherlands at the time of the fire.
The etching shows a view of London from a hill above Southwark. The City of London is on the horizon with plumes of smoke rising from the buildings.
