Execution of Charles I outside the Banqueting House
This engraving depicts the execution of Charles I in 1649, which took place outside the Banqueting House at Whitehall in London. It was widely reported and this version seems to be connected to a print which appeared as an illustration in 'Theatrum Europaeum', 1663 (after page 840), based on a print called 'Endhauptung der Konigs in Engelandt' published by Sebastian Furck, a German publisher. It vividly shows the King's head being brandished to the crowd and a woman fainting in the near left side. Portraits of Charles I and General Fairfax are shown in the top corners and wording has been added to the centre indicating Charles is being transported to heaven.
