Interior of the New Theatre Royal Haymarket as it appeared on the Night of its opening 4 July 1821
This etching depicts the Royal Haymarket theatre which had been rebuilt in 1821 slightly to the south of the previous theatre. From 1853 it was under the management of John Baldwin Buckstone who specialiased in staging comedies. He was connected to Dickens who sent him money to secure acting engagements for Ellen Ternan, his mistress.
