Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1857
Cheyne Walk and Chelsea Old Church
This view of the western end of Cheyne Walk includes, on the right, Cricketers' Public House with a woman in the window and a man by the door, and Thames Coffee house next door. Beyond these two buildings is a row of five late 17th century houses in Prospect Place. In the middle distance is Chelsea Parish Church of All Saints, with the houses and wharves of Lombard Street beyond. A painter of topographical subjects, as well as genre scenes and portraits, Greaves is best known for his views of Chelsea. From around 1863 he was a pupil and studio assistant of J.M. Whistler, an artist who was to have a profound impact on him.
