Cloth Fair, West Smithfield
A detailed watercolour depicting the Dick Whittington Tavern in Cloth Fair, West Smithfield.
The Essex-born artist Alfred Bennett Bamford was chiefly a painter of architectural subjects. A student at the Heatherly School of Fine Art and Camden School of Art, Bamford first exhibited a painting at the Royal Academy in 1883, at the age of twenty-six. He continued to exhibit his work up until 1933, shortly before his death in 1939.
This is one of several watercolours by Bamford in the Museum of London's collection. The others also depict Cloth Fair, West Smithfield.
