Kicking up a Breeze at Neil Hamilton's Hop
In this bawdy drawing a fight is depicted between two participants in a make-shift boxing ring at Neil Hamilton's Hop.
Spectators watch from every corner of the room as two men with bunched fists are spurred on by the women behind them. The fight between the two men is mirrored by the battle breaking out between two women on the right. On the far left, a woman has fainted from the excitement and a gentleman attempts to revive her by administering smelling salts and baring her breasts. Despite the ruckus, a band continues to play from the balcony, seen on the top right.
Thomas Rowlandson was a keen observer of contemporary society and he had first-hand knowledge of London's gaming houses. The man standing under the chandelier, who looks on with a gleeful expression, could possibly be managing bets on who the victor will be.
