Pye Corner, Smithfield
This etching depicts the statue of a boy which was put up at Pie Corner to commemorate the Great Fire of London. The inscription says: ‘This Boy is in Memmory Put up for the late FIRE of LONDON Occasion’d by the Sin of Gluttony 1666.'
The fire supposedly stopped at Pie Corner but actually spread further. Originally the ‘Fat Boy’ stood on the front of a pub called ‘The Fortune of War’, which stood on this site until it was demolished in 1910. A statue still exists on the site today, which is on the corner of Giltspur Street and Cock Lane. As the Great Fire started in Pudding Lane and reputedly ended at Pie Corner, both places with types of food in their names, the fire was believed by many to be a punishment from God for the sin of gluttony.
