A representation of the execution of Lord Lovat
View of the execution of Jacobite Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, aged 80, for high treason on the 9th April, 1747. A large crowd of soldiers with bayonnets surround the scaffold. Lovat has his head on the block. A cloth to catch the head is spread before him and the executioner stands with axe raised. The coffin is next to the block. Lovat was beheaded on Tower Hill, the last person to be so in Britain. In a final ironic twist, one of the wooden grandstands set up for Londoners to watch Lovat's execution collapsed resulting in several deaths before Lovat himself went to the gallows.
