Printed Ephemera — 1918
Photograph, photographic print
Photograph of Flora Drummond campaigning in Smethwick on behalf of Christabel Pankhurst during the General Election of December 1918. Flora, accompanied by other women is seated on a horse and carriage with a printer poster urging the electorate to vote for Christabel and a handwritten placard advertising a meeting to held that evening at 7.30pm attended by Christabel.
Christabel Pankhurst stood at Smethwick as the Women's Party candidate, with the backing of the Coalition government. Her platform was to secure a lasting peace based on obtaining material guarantees against future German aggression; to improve the social conditions of the working class and to crusade against Bolshevism and 'shirkers'. She was also in favour of co-operative housekeeping and the provision of music and refreshments in public houses to make them more respectable for women. Although Christabel received over 8,500 votes she did not, however, succeed in winning the seat of Smethwick, losing to the Labour candidate by just 775 votes. This marked the end of Christabel's involvement in politics.
