Christabel Pankhurst stood at Smethwick in the December 1918 election as the Women's Party candidate, with the backing of the Coalition government. Her platform was to secure a lasting peace based on obtaining material guarantees against future German aggression; to improve the social conditions of the working class and to crusade against Bolshevism and 'shirkers'. She was also in favour of co-operative housekeeping and the provision of music and refreshments in public houses to make them more respectable for women. Christabel did not, however, succeed in persuading a majority of the voters and Smethick, losing to the Labour candidate by 775 votes. This marked the end of Christabel's involvement in politics.
