Printed Ephemera — 1906-02-19
Opening of Parliament, February 1906. "Votes for Women" Procession, Caxton Hall, Westminster.
Postcard with photograph of a crowd of women carrying a banner saying 'Votes For Women'. Beneath is printed 'Opening of Parliament, February 19th 1906. ‘Votes for Women’ Procession, Caxton Hall, Westminster. ('Daily Mirror' Photograph)'.
This was the first meeting held in London by suffragette organisation the Women's Social and Political Union. The 'Daily Mirror' reported that 3,000 women attended. Speakers at the meeting noted that the King's Speech at the opening of parliament had not mentioned women's suffrage. The women then marched to the House of Commons, and although few were allowed into the Lobby, the fledgling WSPU received some useful press coverage.
