Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1896-1903
A Cockney Girl
Phil May was a popular cartoonist and illustrator who regularly contributed to a range of publications, including the 'Daily Graphic', 'Sketch', 'Punch' and the 'Illustrated London News'.
This sketch of a Londoner was made towards the end of May's career. A cockney, a recurring subject in May's art, is portrayed here wearing an elaborate hat and a big smile. It is concisely drawn, probably from life, and close attention has been paid to the woman's collar, face and hat.
When Leeds-born May first arrived in London in 1883 he was virtually penniless. He went on to inspire a generation of cartoonists and illustrators and was elected a member of both the New England Art Club and the Royal Institute.
