British Museum - Egyptian Room
This family is visiting the Egyptian room at the British Museum. During the 19th century the museum opened up its collections to the public and became a favourite destination for family outings. The museum acquired much of its Egyptian material, such as the Rosetta Stone, owing to Britain's victory over Napoleon in Egypt in 1801. At the time, British Museum trustees saw Egyptian art as inferior to Greek and Roman sculpture.
