Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1800-1820
A Coffee House
Coffee houses sprang up all over London during the 18th century. They were sites of civilised conversation, socialising and business, where coffee was served alongside food and other forms of drink, including alcohol. Their popularity continued well into the 19th century and continues today.
A civilian and a soldier are shown propping up the bar where the young barmaid is preparing a syllabub. Other customers include men seated at tables with bottles and glasses in front of them. In the distance a customer can be seen reading the menu while the waiter struggles to open a bottle of wine.
