Stock Jobbers
'Stockjobber' is the term applied to people who buy and sell stocks and speculate in public funds for gain. Rowlandson depicts groups of caricatured stockjobbers bargaining and securing deals in the rotunda of the Bank of England, which was used as a stockmarket between 1770 and 1838. On the drawing's proper-left, a beadle in a uniform can be seen holding a silver-headed staff and waving his watchman's rifle.
This is a preparatory sketch by Rowlandson for a finished watercolour, which is now in the possession of the Bank of England.
