The French Hospital near Old Street
In 1716 the 'French Committee for dispensing the Royal Bounty to the Huguenot refugees' bought a piece of land in Old Street. They purchased it with a bequest from wealthy Huguenot Jacques de Gastigny. They aimed to extend and improve an existing hospice for French Protestants and their descendants in England. Known as 'La Providence', by 1860 the French Hospital sheltered 234 poor people. An offshoot of this organisation located in Kent still provides sheltered housing for elderly people of Huguenot heritage.
