Barges and Other Craft on the River Thames at Southwark
This watercolour depicts the view across the Thames to Southwark Cathedral with Old London Bridge on the left. The river is shown at ‘high water slack’, the moment of no tidal movement when it was safest to pass through the narrow arches of the bridge. Various craft are included in the picture, including a ferry with two watermen and passengers.
John Cleveley Jn., who painted this picture, trained with his brother Robert under their father John Cleveley the Elder (1712–77), and is best known for his drawings of voyages overseas. This work relates to an aquatint print (A18087) and may have been made as part of a series of views of London Bridge and Southwark.
