Scabbard slide, scabbard strap-slide
Scabbard runner of brown ivory carved from a longitudinal section of tusk, probably from an African elephant. It has been suggested that the elliptical pattern of the growth rings indicates that the ivory was cut from the base of the tusk. The upper end is rounded at the front but the back projects beyond it in a flat plate. The body is rectangular but tapers in both planes towards the lower end. The central panel is undecorated but the lower end slopes back before ending in a projecting globular terminal. The back plate has continued beyond the terminal but is incomplete. A large rectangular slot (49 × 6mm) is cut through the sides with 4mm diameter holes above and below. A single transverse groove runs across the back.
