Richmond Bridge
Thomas Rowlandson's drawing shows Richmond Bridge from Twickenham, looking south towards Richmond Village.
In the foreground, a group of men and women are depicting enjoying a picnic on the banks of the river. Across the river, another group can be seen, possibly also enjoying a lunch outdoors. It is a warm day and the river is populated by a number of pleasure boats. This coloured drawing is one of a number by the artist in the Museum's collection, which depict a recognisable location in London.
Richmond Bridge was built between 1774 and 1777 and linked areas of the city previously only connected by ferry. As a result, Richmond became more accessible and Rowlandson's drawing highlights the area's popularity among pleasure-seekers. It is one of several drawings by him of Richmond Bridge.
