Trial of Queen Caroline
Queen Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of George IV, was effectively put on trial by the public reading of a Parliamentary bill intended to force her divorce from the king. The king alleged that his wife had maintained an adulterous affair with her Italian servant, Bartolomeo Pergami, but the unreliability of witnesses and the popularity of Caroline among the British public caused the bill to be withdrawn. This handkerchief was probably produced in support of the queen, who was popular with the British public.
