Hanover Square
Bird-eye view of Hanover Square from above Great George Street, looking north across the garden square along Holles Street, over ‘Tiburn Road’ (now Oxford Street) to Cavendish Square and the fields of Marylebone to the distance hills of Hampstead and Highgate. The view includes a few horse-drawn carriages and a sedan chair. The streets leading into the square are all labelled.
Hanover Square is a residential garden square in the Mayfair area of central London just south of Oxford Street. It was named in celebration of the coronation in 1714 of King George I, who also held the title of the Elector of Hanover. Many of the early residents were Whig supporters of the Hanoverian succession (the plan to ensure that only a Protestant could succeed to the English throne).
