Ranelagh Gardens opened in 1742 as a rival to the pleasure ground at Vauxhall. Its main attraction was its rotunda, a large circular building with booths for eating and drinking, a central fireplace and an orchestra stand. It was well lit with large chandeliers and became a very fashionable venue. Canaletto made a large number of sketches of Ranelagh which were very popular as prints.
