Fashion — 1908
Banner
Mary Lowndes designed the 'Graduates of London University' suffrage banner in 1908. In 1878 the university had been the first in Britain to admit women to degrees.
Lowndes was founder and principal designer for the Artists' Suffrage League. The League was responsible for designing most of the banners carried in demonstrations organised by the non-militant National Union of Women's Suffrage Society (NUWSS). This banner, with the University arms on the shield centre left, is one in the occupational series of banners designed by Lowndes and was first carried in the 13 June 1908 NUWSS procession.
