Five studies of Paralympic Rugby Players
These sketches by Nicholas Garland, capture wheelchair rugby players during a match between Great Britain (in white) and the United States of America (in blue) at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. The match was played at the Basket Ball Arena at the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, on the 5 September 2012. The United States won with 56 points to Team GB's 44. The bottom sketch depicts Nick Springer (1985-2021) from the USA team.
This is one of over three hundred drawings of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games produced by the cartoonist Nicholas Garland, who was appointed Artist of the Olympics by the Mayor of London and GLC. This collection, donated by the artist, includes swift drawings from life of the competing athletes and more carefully worked up watercolours of the crowds, volunteers, Olympic park and other scenes and events from London during the games. Throughout the process Garland was keen to make his main subject ‘London and its patient, tolerant, good-humoured, independent people.’
