Cod-piece
A rare archaeological find of a men’s 16th century cod-piece.
Codpieces were first introduced during the second half of the 15th century, as a reaction to the shortening of the doublet, even after fashions dictated the doublet to lengthen, the cod-piece remained, and by the 16th century was an essential part of men’s dress, from peasant to noblemen.
This codpiece is made of brown wool, cut in several pattern pieces and then padded with layers of more wool. There is additional black stitching over the seams that appears to have been added after they were discovered.
