Dress
Girl's dress from the 1770s, made of linen printed in purple with a floral design of acorns on stems. The bodice is lined with fine white linen, the rest of the dress is unlined. There is some pieceing on the skirt which indicates that the dress was altered to accommodate growth. Additional material was added to the sleeves, possibly for the same reason.
The Victoria & Albert Museum holds textile designs from the factories of the Wares & Munns which are similar but not identical. The fabric can also be compared to the printed cotton bought by Barbara Johnson in 1771, see Natalie Rothstein (ed), Barbara Johnson's Album of Styles and Fabrics, 1987.
