Hat
Black silk velvet hat with a high crown, flat top and narrow flat brim. Patterned velvet covers a hard base and is gathered into regular pleats around the base of the crown, which is further embellished with a thin green curly braid. Large button with crouched detail is stitched onto the top/centre of the flat crown. The black velvet appears to have faded to a brown/black. The braid appears to be of a later date to the velvet. The hat show signs of significant repair.
The hat was acquired from John Seymour Lucas (1849-1923), a historical painter and costume designer. Lucas painted scenes from the 16th - 18th centuries, possibly relying on his own collection of historic clothing for inspiration.
