Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison
The arrest of the Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison. This press image depicts a smiling Emily being arrested by two policemen. The date and incident is unknown. Emily Wilding Davison was imprisoned 7 times for militancy between 1909 and 1912. First arrested in March 1909 for taking part in a deputation from Caxton Hall to see the Prime Minister she also received terms of imprisonment for window smashing, disrupting meetings and taking a horsewhip to a man she thought, mistankenly, was Lloyd George. In December 1911 Emily initiated a new form of militancy - setting fire to pillar boxes for which she received her longest prison sentence of 6 months. Pillar box work was subsequently adopted by other Suffragettes.
