'The Saddest site on the river..'
Henry Turner photographed this group of elderly men at Gravesend, and thought their wistful observation rather sad. The sailing barge which is being prepared for docking for repair is the 'Calais', which was built in 1903 and operated by T. Scholey & Co of East Greenwich. Photographed for E. Arnot Robertson's book 'Thames Portrait' (1937).
