In 1923, river erosion under the south pier of the old Waterloo Bridge, built in 1817, started to give serious cause for concern. The bridge was closed to traffic in the following year, but it then took the London County Council ten years to commit itself to a replacement. The bridge was not fully reopened until 1945.Henry Turner's photograph looks over the works of the replacement bridge towards Somerset House and the Temple. Photographed for E. Arnot Robertson's book 'Thames Portrait' (1937).
