Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1944
A Communist Rally at the Stoll Theatre
Grace Golden made several sketches of a communist rally which took place at Stoll Theatre in Kingsway in 1944. These sketches, mounted together, depict both the audience and the speakers at the rally, including Harry Pollitt, chairman of the British Communist Party.
In the main drawing of the trio, a speaker can be seen standing in front of a large banner 'FOR VICTORY'. While the speaker is drawn in some detail, the people seated around him are only loosely outlined.
Stoll Theatre was purchased by the theatre entrepreneur Oswald Stoll during the 1910s and established as variety theatre. A number of theatrical and operatic productions were performed at the venue, which closed in 1957 and was later demolished.
