Fashion — C. 1750
Uniform, military uniform
During the reign of George II efforts were made to standardise the uniform of the British Army. A Royal Clothing Warrant was issued in 1751 which introduced new regulations for regimental dress. This uniform predates these reforms. The jacket is made of thick wool and is lined throughout with mustard yellow wool twill, embroidered with silver metal thread. It has a silver braid on the left shoulder. The yellow waistcoat is also made of dense, stiff wool broadcloth embroidered with silver-gilt metal thread.
This uniform was worn by the British Army officer, Richard St George. He was a Colonel in the 20th Regiment of Foot between 1737 and 1740 and later commanded the 8th Dragoons until 1755. Dragoons were trained to ride on horseback but to fight on foot as infantrymen. St George may have served at the Battle of Dettingen during the War of the Austrian Succession.
The white wool breeches are replica, made for display.
