Printed Ephemera — 2012
Bag, paper bag
Olympics gold medal 'sick bag' silk screen printed in gold and white. Designed by Lydia Leith as an alternative souvenir to commemorate the London 2012 Olympics. The graphic design, inspired by retro airline logos comprises a drawing of a gold medal on ribbon below which is printed 'Gold Sick bag'. The bag is signed at the bottom in pencil by the designer. The bag is one in a series of similar alternative souvenir sick bags, the idea first inspired by the designer the previous year in 2011 after she heard people complain they were 'sick of the Royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton' several months before the event. However the bags do not necessarily reflect anti-Olympics sentiment but rather capture the ambivalent 'love-hate' attitude towards such national events traditionally shown by the British public together with the satirical British sense of humour.
