Skirt, petticoat
White silk satin petticoat lined with plain weave white silk. Cut to accommodate side hoops with bound side slits for pocket access. The petticoat is ornamented with wadded and corded quilting and finished at the hem with white silk fly braid. The quilting is worked to create a design which echoes that of the dress. Its deep border incorporates the flowing patterned ribbons and stylised flowers used on the dress, enclosing a strapped diapered ground below a deep plain wadded diaper. The narrow border at the hem has a repeating design of shell-like motifs.
Notes by Linda R Baumgarten: Cream with cord quilted border; diamond top. Fringe trim. Width: face: 18.75 in; backing not visible. Fabric: satin weave silk; interlining: probably wool cords; lining: cotton. Tape finished. Cream silk running stitches, 24-25 stitches per inch in border, 9-10 per inch in upper portion.
Linen tape waist binding and ties. Quilting was done in one length of joined fabric panels, then seamed at the right hand side, this seam is covered on the inside by the silk lutstring lining; hem is bound on outside for approx 1/16” by same silk ribbon as on dress hem, sewn with tiny fell stitches from the outside, which forms a facing on the inside sewn along the top edge with small running stitches; fly braid is sewn on with long running stitches; skirt fullness is taken up with knife pleats beginning at side front and facing towards the back; the waist binding appears to be sewn to the folded upper edge with a combination of running, slip and fell stitches; the pocket/side slits are finished by turning the quilted and lining edges in towards each other and sewing with small running stitches. No obvious sign of alteration
