Cloak
This outfit has a strong medieval and theatrical feel. It was worn by the concert singer Dorothea Crompton, who studied at the Guildhall School of Speech and Drama, and was probably made for her. It consists of three pieces: a velvet underdress with long ruched sleeves, a brocade tabard with fringed edges and the brocade cloak with a velvet collar and an Art Nouveau buckle by Liberty.
The cloak is made of rose red brocade woven with a metallic pattern of symbols is made from one piece of fabric and gathered into a reddish orange velvet collar which is ruched to stand up against the neck. The cloak is fastened at the front of the neck with a metal buckle cut out to imitate flowing tulips and leaves, fitting into a rectangular shape. It is lined with red silk. The silver buckle has Birmingham hallmarks for 1902 and Liberty's 'Cymric' mark.
See the Dorothea Crompton Collection at the Corporation of London Records Office for more information.
