Black and white photographic postcard showing the Italian runner Pietri Dorando running the marathon race for the London Olympic Games of 1908. He is followed by two members of his support team on bicycles. The race was run between Windsor and the White City Stadium at Shepherd's Bush. Dorando was to be disqualified from the race despite being first to cross the line. He was exhausted by the time he reached the Stadium, stumbling many times, and was helped by officials in the closing stages. He was disqualified following complaints by the American team, but became a popular hero for his effort.
