Social History — 2011
Sign
The Occupy London movement grew out of an attempt to occupy the London Stock Exchange in Paternoster Square on 15 October 2011. The protest was organised in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York. After City of London police cordoned off Paternoster Square, the protesters set up camp in tents outside St Paul's Cathedral.
The Occupy movement also set up a satellite camp at Finsbury Square and established the 'Bank of Ideas' in a disused building owned by the United Bank of Switzerland (UBS) on Sun Street in Hackney. The occupation of the UBS building came to an end when protestors were evicted by bailiffs and police in the early hours on 30 January 2012 following a High Court ruling. The original camp remained outside St Paul's until it was evicted by the Corporation of London on 28 February 2012.
This sign references George Orwell's novel 1984 and was originally displayed at the Occupy LSX camp in St Paul's Cathedral. It subsequently moved to the Occupy camp at Finsbury Square and then to the Bank of Ideas.
