Rules of the Loyal Temperance Lodge 4481, Stepney District Branch, of the Independent Order of odd Fellows
The Odd Fellows friendly societies emerged in the 17th century as a reaction against the more exclusive Medieval trade guilds and consisted of organisations of artisans and craftsmen who contributed to a common welfare fund. In 1810, the society split and an independent order formed under the title of ‘Manchester Unity’. The name of the Stepney branch lodge reflects the growing influence of Evangelicalism and the temperance movement in the East End of London in the late 19th century.
