Navy League guide to the Thames Review
The Navy League existed to campaign for a stronger Royal Navy, to protect Britain’s commercial and military interests, and maintain the Empire. The parade of naval warships off of Southend was intended to showcase Britain’s military capabilities, and impress foreign dignitaries, and the Navy League Guide reflected this with details about the ships and their armaments, and essays about naval power. However the guide also contains a wide range of fascinating adverts, for Edwardian products ranging from marine engineering equipment, to fashionable clothing and hair treatments.
