Outer gate at the City House of Correction, Holloway
Book illustration of the outer gate at the City House of Correction, Holloway, from page 416 of 'The criminal prisons of London and scenes of prison life' by Henry Mayhew and John Binny. The authors note that the "prison is built on a rising ground, on the west of the Holloway Road, originally purchased by the City Corporation to be used as a cemetery at the time of the cholera in 1832. The ground, consisting of ten acres, is surrounded by a brick wall about eighteen feet high."
