Tower Bridge open to allow the 'Sir Alan Herbert' to sail through
In 1974 the 'Sir Alan Herbert' was owned by the East Coast Sail Trust. The boat was a Thames sailing barge which was originally named Lady Jean. It was renamed after MP and naval officer Alan Herbert who died in November 1971. Used as a training barge for trips along the Thames, she sailed between the Thames Estuary and Orfordness. Students on board studied ecology, geography, maritime history as well as commerce and shipping.
