Spinner, ship's log
A fish or spinner for a ship's log. (see 71.174/37). This device was attached to the log mechanism by a line and dropped into the sea. Trailed astern of a ship of yacht, the vanes forced the torpedo shape to spin rapidly, and the revolutions were conveyed to the mechanical log mounted on the taffrail of the vessel. This enabled the crew to measure the ship's speed and distance of travel.
