Bowl
Part of a decorated samian ware bowl, form Dragendorff 37, with scroll alternating with an acanthus, in place of an ovolo, made at Les Martres-de-Veyre, Central Gaul by the potter Donnaucus, also known as X-13. Decoration includes cupid figures, and festoons containing nine-petalled flowers. The sherd has been heavily burnt, turning the red clay black, perhaps in the Hadrianic fire of AD 120-125. Samian ware is high-quality Roman tableware made in Gaul (modern-day France) and exported throughout the empire.
