The Chapel, Pentonville Prison
Book illustration of the prison chapel, on the 'separate system', in Pentonville Prison, during divine service, taken from page 133 of 'The criminal prisons of London and scenes of prison life' by Henry Mayhew and John Binny. The separate system was designed to prevent prisoners having any contact with each other, and included the wearing of hoods and a rule of silence. An example of a separate system prison chapel can still be seen at Lincoln Castle.
