Port & River — 1861
Dinner menu, Whitebait Dinner Menu
A hand written Whitebait dinner Bill of Fare or menu produced for Mr Major Macleay's party, from the 'Ship' tavern, Greenwich, dated October 7th 1861. Freshly caught Whitebait from the river, was the main feature of these dinners, which became very popular as part of boating excursions on the Thames in the 19th century. Charles Dickens records attending several such dinners at Greenwich in the 1840s and 1850s. Whitebait dinners also became popular with Members of Parliament, celebrating the end of parliamentary sessions.
