Stomacher
White ribbed silk embroidered with multi-coloured silks in bold floral pattern. Leaves with gold and silver laid thread. Lined with white linen. Tapering from top to three-cornered lower point. Three tabs each side (two missing) for attaching to dress. Worked hole each side at base. Condtion: fair; rather soiled; embroidery threads loose; backing stained.
Description: see above; no tabs are missing – two have been folded under; upper two tabs are cut in one with the silk and linen layers, rest of tabs are sewn into the stomacher. Perimeter is finished by turning raw edges of silk and linen together and whip stitching; lower four tabs are made of linen and sandwiched between the silk and lining layers of the stomacher; the linen tabs are finished at the side edges with narrow rolled hems that are slip and/or fell stitched; the lining is pieced on the left-hand side with a lapped and slip stitched seam. No obvious signs of alteration.
