Chapel Market, Islington
Young man and woman walking past Woolworth's in Chapel Market, Islington. Chapel Market (Chapel Street until 1936) was established as a street market in 1879 and F. W. Woolworth & Co. Ltd opened this store with its characteristic neo-Georgian front at Nos 40-42 in 1929. A few doors down, on No. 48, John James Sainsbury had opened the first Sainsbury's branch in 1882. The couple both wear Afro hairstyles, popular in the 1960s as a symbol of Black heritage pride and cultural identity.
